For more than 140 years, the Canadian government has been staking its claim over the Arctic, sometimes causing harm to the people who actually live there. By the 21st century, the race for resources, control and access in the region began to escalate, making Arctic sovereignty one of the hottest topics on the international stage. After all this time, Canada is still trying to assert sovereignty in the North, but to do so, Northerners say it must start with them.
